About Tonbridge Athletic Club

Club Membership

We cater for athletes of all ages – from youngsters aged 9 to veteran athletes. The Club has a friendly atmosphere where everyone wants each other to do well and encourages non-members to attend trial sessions before committing to membership.

Please do NOT come to the Club without first making a trial membership enquiry and then waiting for an invitation from our Trials Co-ordinator. You will NOT be able to join in until you have been registered with the Trials Co-ordinator and have received a time and date for a trial session.

A brief history of TAC

In 1947 two men, both policemen in Tonbridge, had the vision and foresight to found an athletic club in the town. One was Tom Jones, a pre-war sprinter of some note; and the other, Norman Fowler, also a sprinter, of county standard and an athletics administrator.

The venture needed determination to succeed as there was no track or facilities of any kind. But there was a piece of ground, belonging to Tonbridge School, on the right hand side, going north, of Shipbourne Road, just past the Yardley park turning. This became the first home of the Club and had to be got ready before entertaining visiting teams right down to the marking out of lanes for racing. That field has long since become a housing estate but the Club survives on its present location at Tonbridge School and many aspiring boys and girls, men and women have benefited from its presence.

Mike Rowbottom Tribute

Mike stepped down as President of Tonbridge Athletic Club in November 2011.

Picture

As a tribute to Mike he was presented with an album of memories that consisted of photographs, newspaper and magazine articles, plus messages from some of the people who he had helped over the years.

Below I have displayed two files. One is a sleclection of most of the material used in the album and the second is a record of the messages received and included in the album.

Nothing can really do justice to the work that Mike has contributed to local athletics over the last 50 to 60 years, but hopefully this will give everyone a little idea of the work he has done.
