Tonbridge Athletic Club had a few representatives wearing Great Britain vests at the World Masters Athletics Championships, in Gothenburg, Sweden last week, with two returning with medals.
Ben Reynolds finished third in the over 60 men’s 5000 metres, in 17.11.33, whilst Diane Wright helped the GB over 55 women’s 4×100 metres relay team to silver medals, behind the USA.
Ian Crawley scored 6558 points in the over 60 men’s Decathlon to finish sixth, whilst Nina Ridge finished fifth in the over 50 women’s Heptathlon with 4446 points.
At the England under 17 combined events championships, staged at Eton over the weekend, Sam Newton won the bronze medal in the men’s Decathlon, scoring 6013 points. Ella Thomas placed fifth in the under 17 women’s Heptathlon.
Tonbridge sprinters Henry Marshall and George Blake stepped down in distance, from their usual 400m, to compete in the 100m and 200m at the Stratford Speed Grand Prix, held at Newham. Both set a series of personal bests, with Marshall running 10.89 and Blake 10.94 in the 100 metres, although both races had wind readings a fraction beyond the allowable 2.0 metres per second, for valid performances. However, the wind had dropped enough later for both to set official 200 metres bests of 21.95 for Marshall and 22.16 for Blake.
On Wednesday, Ben Gardiner won the 800 metres A-race at the Cambridge Harriers Open Meeting, where he ran 1.50.22, although frustratingly outside his personal best, set earlier this season.
