Tonbridge AC wish to thank all clubs and participants for supporting our summer relay event, for competing in such good spirit and with great enthusiasm.

Thank you to Penshurst Place for an excellent course and for their facilities. Thank you to all marshalls, volunteers and supporters for enabling this first event to progress.

The event could not have gone ahead without generous sponsorship from Birketts and Hamptons with prizes kindly donated by the Running Hub in Southborough, Recovery Room Therapies in Hildenborough, Up and Running in Sevenoaks, Chapel Down, Squerryes Winery, Circular & Co and Quizified.

We hope to welcome many of you back at a similar date next year.

Event Report: Harriers, Tonbridge and Sevenoaks battle for glory in the shadows of Henry VIII’s home

134 teams from 27 Kent and Sussex clubs competed in the second Tonbridge AC Midsummer Relay Race on a warm, dry evening in Penshurst Place last week.   The popular relay was a huge success over the undulating 4km route. Tunbridge Wells Harriers dominated the women’s race, whilst Tonbridge AC triumphed in the men’s race. Sevenoaks AC won the highly competitive mixed team event.

In the ladies race, just as she had in 2024, Tunbridge Wells Harriers Laura Whitehead led home the first leg with the third fastest lap of the race. Amelie Karlsson from the Harriers protected the lead on leg two before former Great Britain international Ashley Fennell scorched round in a ladies course record time of 14:19. Canterbury and Tonbridge filled the podium.

In the men’s race Isaac Arnott of the host club narrowly led home Eltham based Cambridge Harriers after the first leg.  Tonbridge club stalwart, Steve Strange  then created a decisive gap on the second leg before Sean Molloy, charged through to break the tape first for Tonbridge with the fastest fastest lap of the race. Ben Shearer brought Cambridge Harriers home in second ahead of Mat Dennis representing the Tonbridge second team.

The third Alan Bennett trophy, in memory of the athletic club’s former president, was awarded for a mixed team entry. Sevenoaks veteran Allan Lee led the runners home after leg one. Nicolene Hanekom was the second fastest female runner of the day and her strong leg enabled Jamie Philip to take the glory on leg three. They led home Medway and Maidstone AC and the host club.

Mote Park Runners, Larkfield AC, Lingfield AC, Crowbrough and Wadhurst Runners had multiple enthusiastic teams in this event, which was sponsored by Hamptons estate agents and Birketts law firm.
